How to Start a Car Detailing Business at 14: A Teen Entrepreneur’s Guide

Hey, I’m Elan, a 14-year-old from Bradenton, Florida, and I’m excited to share how I started my car detailing business, Sunshine Detailz. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs (my mom and dad run Turo Photographer and a couple of other businesses), I’ve always been surrounded by the hustle and the idea of creating something of my own. If you’re like me and want to make some extra money while learning valuable skills, here’s how you can start your own car detailing business too.

Step 1: Test the Waters

Before going all-in, I wanted to make sure people actually needed their cars detailed. I started by asking friends, family, and neighbors if they’d be willing to let me detail their cars for a low price, or even free at first. This helped me get some experience and see if there was a demand. Plus, I got to practice my skills without any pressure.

Pro Tip: Use this time to figure out what works and what doesn’t, and ask for feedback so you can keep improving.

Step 2: Identify Your Ideal Customers

For my business, Turo customers have been perfect. They need their cars cleaned regularly, especially between rentals. This means they keep coming back for my services, which gives me consistent work.

Step 3: Get the Right Supplies

To do a great job, you need the right tools and products. I use eco-friendly products because they’re better for the environment, and they also appeal to my customers. Here’s what I recommend:

Where to Buy

I usually get my supplies from Amazon or local stores like AutoZone. My parents taught me to shop around for deals, so sometimes I’ll hit up Walmart or other online stores to save a few bucks.

Step 4: Create a Service Checklist

To make sure every car I detail is up to industry standards, I created a checklist. This way, I never miss a step, and my customers are always happy with the results:

  • Exterior Wash: Use eco-friendly soap, rinse, and dry with microfiber towels.

  • Wax Application: Apply wax to protect the paint and give it a nice shine.

  • Tire Cleaning: Make those tires look brand new with a good cleaner.

  • Interior Vacuuming: Get every crumb and speck of dirt out of the seats, floor mats, and carpets.

  • Dashboard and Console Cleaning: Wipe down everything with safe, eco-friendly cleaners.

  • Window Cleaning: Leave the windows streak-free, inside and out.

Step 5: Capture and Share Your Work

Since most of my business comes through word of mouth, having high-quality photos and videos of my finished work is crucial. My parents run Turo Photographer, a company that offers professional photography services at affordable rates, which is perfect for up-and-coming businesses like mine.

While we’re based in the Tampa Bay/Bradenton area now, I know not everyone lives nearby. If you’re elsewhere, I recommend searching Google for an affordable local photographer or checking out Turo's list of professional photographers.

I use these photos on TikTok to showcase my work, and it’s been amazing how other teens share my videos with their parents, helping my business grow!

Step 6: Making It Official

If your business starts to take off like mine did, you might want to make it official by forming an LLC. My parents helped me look into this, and I found out that in Florida, you need to be 18 to register an LLC, so I would need their help to do it legally. But don’t worry—if you’re too young to get an LLC, you can still open a bank account in your name to manage your earnings.

Benefits of an LLC:

  • Liability Protection: Protects your personal stuff if something goes wrong.

  • Business Bank Account: Makes managing your money easier and more professional.

Step 7: Branding and Marketing

Branding and marketing are essential for any business, and they’ve been key to my success. Here’s how I got started:

  • Create a Name and Logo: I brainstormed and came up with “Sunshine Detailz,” then designed a simple logo that captures the vibe of my business.

  • Build a Website: Having a website is crucial for credibility and reaching more customers. My favorite platform for this is Hostinger—it’s affordable, easy to use, and offers everything you need to get started. If you’re interested, you can use my personal Hostinger link to get a great deal.

  • Get Business Cards: I hand these out to every customer, and they’ve really helped spread the word about my services.

  • Use Social Media: TikTok and Instagram are my go-to platforms for showcasing my work. It’s amazing how quickly word spreads when you create engaging content that people want to share!

Step 8: Growing the Business

As my business grows, I’m thinking about bringing on some friends to help. I’ll make sure they know how to be professional and reliable, just like my parents taught me. If you do this too, make sure everyone is on the same page about quality and service.

Step 9: Professionalism and Legal Stuff

Even though I’m only 14, being professional is key. I always show up on time, keep my word, and make sure my customers are happy. As for the legal stuff, just be aware that each state has different rules about what minors can and can’t do when it comes to business. Check with your parents or a local attorney if you’re unsure.

Step 10: Get Help from the SBA (If You’re Older)

If you’re a bit older or when you’re ready to scale up, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has tons of resources to help you grow your business. They offer mentoring, financing options, and more.

Conclusion

Starting a car detailing business at 14 is a great way to learn how to run a business, make some extra money, and maybe even build a future career. With the right tools, a solid plan, and a little help from family and friends, you can make it happen.

Whether you’re just testing the waters or ready to go all-in, the key is to start small, learn as you go, and keep improving. Remember, Sunshine Detailz didn’t happen overnight—it took time, effort, and the support of my entrepreneurial family.

Good luck, and happy detailing!
